iPhone!!

So, I've done it. I've entered the world of iPhone.

Now I have to ask- why can't I just be a normal person who uses her phone for the 2 year contract and then calmly goes in when it's time for an upgrade and purchases a new phone? Sigh. Life just isn't that easy.

Instead, I'm the girl who goes to run errands on Friday evening with her dog in the backseat of the car, because, that's right, the dog barely fits in the front seat anymore. Of course I take my phone, then a Blackberry that had been dropped excessively, with me. The thingy that holds the rolling ball-mouse thing on my Blackberry had been falling off, but no big deal, right? I just kept fixing it. Not this time.

Here's the scene: I get home. The thing... we'll call it the ball holder... falls off of the phone. I'm standing outside my car in the parking lot with little monster Jake on his leash. I'm holding the phone with the rolling ball fully exposed to the elements. I, for some idiotic reason, think that it will be possible to walk Jake into my apartment and hold the phone flat in my hand so that the rolling ball doesn't fall out of the phone. Jake tugs the leash. I look down. The ball is gone.

You can't do anything on a Blackberry without a ball. Except type names into the phone and call them. I called Mom, panicking, clearly. She rationally told me to take it to the store. Duh. In my panic I hadn't thought of that. I run inside, jump on the computer, find out the local AT&T store is still open for one more hour, so I jump right back in the car and head that way. (Jake was in his crate, don't worry.) Then I called Will. He laughed incessantly and then said, "That's why I hate Blackberries." Wow, thanks, brother.

Then we have the scene at the store: I'm not an authorized user on the account. I can't make changes, but "Marty" can call and tell the AT&T corporate people to make me an authorized user so that I can make a change... also known as buying a phone. (Come on, people! Do you want to make the sale or not?!) Of course, "Marty" is on his phone and won't answer my calls. Clearly, Dad, THIS IS AN EMERGENCY! So, what do I do in crisis? Yes, call Mom again. She pretends to be "Marty" and saves me.

Then I proceed to take an hour and a half to ask every question imaginable, call friends with iPhones to let them talk me into it, panic about money, call Mom, panic about insurance, call Will, panic about the color of my phone cover, bargain with Joe, panic about the color of my phone, panic about the memory size on my phone, all while watching the draft on the TV in the store. I think I even threw myself over the counter in dispair at one point. Was that over Colt or the phone?! Poor Mr. Joe at AT&T. He didn't know what he was getting into the last hour (and a half) of his Friday night. Bless his heart. I gave him fabulous ratings on my customer service survey.

Exciting Friday night in Waco. Like I said, sometimes life just can't be that easy.

cajun shrimp

...in other news, i'm still obsessed with cajun shrimp nail polish. it has stood the test of time. OPI, you can try, but you won't top this one. i do enjoy reading the names on the bottles, though. if my current career doesn't work out, i'm totally considering becoming an OPI nail polish namer. how do you apply for that?

The Names of the Day.

So, today was Earth Day, and Draft Day, and Diadeloso. First things first: Dia is definitely not as cool as an "adult" as it was as a student. I think Hardage summed it up best in our early morning, pre-work text convo:

Me: "It's such a dreary Dia."
Hardage: "Serves those kids right for being lucky enough to still be in college."

Isn't it the truth? I'll guess I'll just settle for the small joys, though: half a day of work and a nap! Happy DIA! Wow, am I really excited about this? Growing up is tough.

Jake, on the other hand, had the best DIA of his life. He chased basketballs and golf balls, licked kids' faces, wrestled several dogs both bigger and smaller (oops!) than he is, and pooped on the street. (What do you do in this awkward situation? You walk away.) He took a 2 hour nap post-Dia, woke up and tossed his pig slippers around the house, fell asleep with a toy in his mouth, woke up and attacked his mom, chewed a hanger to bits, chewed a toy created for chewing, and is now snoring on the couch behind me. This was, quite possibly, one of the best days of his little life.

...and now for the NFL Draft...

"Hi, I'm Sam Bradford. And Sports Center starts right now." Do you think Sports Center filmed that clip before or after he went #1 overall in the draft? I wonder if they filmed the same clip with all of the people that they thought had even a tiny shot of going first? Where is that extra film?? Seriously... these are good questions.

And Timmy T to another orange and blue team? Cute.

That's the real analysis. You won't get this anywhere else, people.

...and now for Earth Day...

Hmmm. I've got nothing. But I do put my Diet Coke cans (however many there may be for that day) and water bottles in the recycle bin at work. I feel good about that.

you wiggin.

Along with being a new parent, I also have the joys of experiencing my first real job.

I coordinate the tutoring program in our athletic department and also work with students as a learning specialist of sorts. Pretty much every afternoon leaves me feeling like a small tornado
(consisting of all 6 foot plus humans and one smaller point guard) just blew through my office. It also leaves my mind spinning with thoughts of "what did that even mean?!" At this point, though, we've spent so much time together that I just come out and ask.

Our time in study hall goes a little something like this: I help increase their writing skills; they increase my street cred. I've been told I'm cooler now since I've spent time with them. (...but of course, they are the ones that told me that. Does it still count?) Let's just say that I'm sharpening my English skills in more ways than one. And I love it.

Here's what I'm learning:

Wiggin
Basketball team says: "You know, it's like trippin."

Clown
Urban Dictionary says:
2. clown: A person who is humourous without intention, therefore is a dumb BLEEP. (censor!)

Already
Urban Dictionary says:
1. already: Houston, TX's gangsta resident way to say 'Fo Sho' or 'Yeah.'
- You gotta hit this club with us mayne - Already
2. already: Short for "you already know." Used in Texas slang, it's an affirmation. Pronounced: "aw reddy"
Basketball team says: exactly the same thing.

Chickionary
Urban Dictionary says:
1. chickionary: A list of girls phone numbers from A-Z. The same as a little black book.
Basketball team says: THE SAME THING!
*Surprisingly, I do have a pretty diverse vocabulary thanks to my time spent in the 318, but this was a new one. Apparently I'm just behind the times.

There are so many more, but I'll just have to rely on Baylor's #24 for my quotes of the day. He's basically hilarious. Without trying.

Until next time, I'll be posted like a stamp. (Compliments of Mr. Dunn.)

welcoming jake.

For those of you who don't know, I've become a parent. Was this planned? No. Did I think through this life-altering decision before I made it? No. Did I think about the financial implications of a child? No. Did I think about how difficult being a single mother would be? No.

Now I know how parents of human children must feel.

In fact, I kinda think people should be required to spend a significant amount of time with a furry, four-legged child before making a lifetime commitment to a human child. There's serious value to it. Puppy parent or not, I respect all parents of human babies- I can't even imagine how you do it all!

Don't worry, everyone, I bought Jake a crate. And food. Which he absolutely destroys on a daily basis. He also sprints through the apartment, sometimes barks in his sleep, has been through 3 sizes of collars, has more than doubled his body mass in his 5 short months of life, and has entered a new phase according to The Boxer Handbook: chewing.

But the sweet puplet redeems himself daily. More to come.
